The Importance of Light                   Online Workshop Series

The Importance of Light; and how it influences form, description, volume, depth, and color in your paintings.
 
In this Zoom workshop, I’m going to explain the three most often used light sources (daylight, incandescent light, and candle light) along with their unique specific characteristics, used by the masters past and present used to create and control the profound light statements in their art. Through detailed assignments, you will be directed to experience and work on at least 3 paintings for the workshop using one of those light types in between each class meeting to learn and master the use of each specific light source.

 

Discussion, examples, and instructional handouts will help clarify what is taught in class. 

 

Students are encourage to email their progress on the assignments between class meetings for evaluations and critiques enabling students to improve their work between class meetings thereby reaping the most benefits from the workshop. As a result of this important workshop, your artwork

will improve to the next level toward the full mastery of light once you’ve completely mastered the fundamentals of light. 

 

Instructional material will be distributed via email. Additional insights, presentations, critique reviews, and open discussion, will be the bulk of the presentations during class time and will help clarify fundamentals and procedures.

Open to painting students 16 and older, limited to 15 students.  Cost:  $150/student.

Painting: Improving the Fundamentals, Techniques, & Procedures of the Painting Media

Description: This 5 week class (meeting on Zoom every Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 o’clock for five weeks, or Thursday evening from 7-10 pm) is geared to improving and mastering the basic fundamentals of light, volume, depth, color mixing, design, and content. Open to all painting media types. Each student is individually evaluated at their present level of understanding and competence, and instructed on how to turn their painting problem areas into strengths. Discussions on technical aspects will clarify correct procedures on how to create a sound painting statement. Instructional handouts will be targeted to individual needs, and distributed prior to the class through email, and presentations on zoom will help clarify the fundamentals and procedures, and answer all questions. Interested students are requested to contact the instructor prior to the class by email indicating their intention to sign up and selecting their preferred day and time, at larryjblovits@gmail.com with a statement of what they want to learn and examples of their current artwork. Discussing the various painting surfaces; The proper use of solvents and painting mediums; brush characteristics and usage; color characteristics - intensity and opacity; Selecting a palette and mixing colors - dependent on their tincture strength; Matching the value of the source image; application procedures; and various drying times for different colors. Why covering the whole surface is necessary for color/value re-evaluation. Care and cleaning of brushes and palette. Demonstrations of color mixing, medium use, and physical and optical blending of colors. Numerous instructional handouts will clarify and reinforce what is taught in class.

Oil Painting-Creating a Painting from General to Specific

The importance of knowing, and using, drawing and design basic fundamentals to create a strong painting statement. How light plays an important role in the creating the illusion of form and identifying color. How geometric and aerial perspective create the illusion of volume and depth. How both of these factors help to create the mood and content the painting. Knowing the transparency, opacity, and tincture of each color aids in color mixing. How important it is to match the values, and how to mix this. How selecting the brush type and application is very important for description and emphasis. Repainting (adding additional layers) adds solidity to the statement. Numerous instructional handouts will clarify and reinforce what is taught in class.

Importance of cleaning your brushes immediately after use or at end of painting session. Discussion of working from nature or photographic sources, positive and negative.
